A New Spirit – An open letter from Israeli Descendants of the Countries of Islam

We, the daughters and sons of parents who immigrated to Israel from Arab and Muslim countries, hereby express our support for the new spirit presented by president Obama in his Cairo speech. A spirit of reconciliation, realistic vision, striving for justice and dignity, respect for different religions, cultures and human beings, whoever and wherever they are.

We were born in Israel and we are Israelis. Our country is important to us, and we would like to see it secure, just, and prosperous for the benefit of its inhabitants. Yet, the recent conflict into which we were born cannot erase the long history of hundreds and thousands of years, during which our parents and ancestors lived in Muslim and Arab countries. Not only they have lived in the region from time immemorial, but were also part of the fabric of daily life and have contributed to the development of the region and its culture.

Nowadays, the cultures of the lands of Islam, Middle East, and the Arab world, are all still part of our identity; a part which we cannot, and do not wish to repress nor uproot.

Surly, the Jews living in Muslim countries endured some difficult times. Nevertheless, those painful moments should not conceal nor erase the well known and documented history of shared life. Muslim rule over the Jews was much more tolerant and lenient compared with non-Muslim countries. The fate of Jews in Muslim regions cannot be compared with the tragic fate of Jews in other regions, Europe in particular.

One can view the last decades as a period during which a deep chasm has been opened between the Jews and Israel and the Arab and Muslim world.

We however, prefer to perceive these last decades as a painful yet temporary crack in a history that goes longer than that. We have a shared past and a shared future. Thus, when we look at the map, we see Israel as part of the Middle East, and not solely from a geographical perspective.

Judaism and Islam are not far apart from religious, spiritual, historical and cultural point of views. The alliance between these two religions dates back many generations. Yet the memory of this partnership and the unique history of Jews originated from the Muslim and Arab world (which today constitutes 50% of the Jewish population in Israel!) has unfortunately faded, both in Israel as well as in the majority of the Muslim world. In the necessary reconciliation process between West and East, oriental Jews can and should embody a live bridge of remembrance, healing and partnership.

From our point of view the rift between Israel/Jews and the Arab/Muslim world cannot last forever, it is splitting our identities and our souls. As for the tragic Israeli-Palestinian conflict, we hope that a fair solution of mutual respect and mutual recognition will be reached very soon. A solution that considers the hopes, fears and pains of the Palestinian side, as well as those of the Israeli side.

We therefore, express our support for the new spirit set forth by President Obama in Cairo. We wish to join the vision for a future in which bridges of mutual respect and humanity will replace walls of suspicion, aggression and hatred. All this in the spirit of justice and humanism shared by both Judaism and Islam.

רוח חדשה - מכתב בני ובנות יוצאי ארצות האיסלאם

אנחנו, בנות ובנים ישראלים להורים יוצאי ארצות-ערב וארצות האיסלאם, מביעים את תמיכתנו ברוח החדשה שהציג הנשיא אובמה בנאומו בקהיר - רוח של פיוס, ראייה מפוכחת, חתירה לצדק, וכבוד. כבוד לדתות השונות, לתרבויות השונות, ולבני האדם באשר הם בני אדם.

נולדנו בישראל ואנחנו ישראלים. מדינתנו חשובה לנו, ואנחנו רוצים לראותה בטוחה, צודקת ומשגשגת לטובת תושביה. בו בזמן, ההיסטוריה הקרובה שלתוכה נולדנו אינה יכולה למחוק היסטוריה בת מאות ואלפי שנים, שבהן חיו הורינו והורי הורינו במזרח-התיכון, באזורים העצומים שבשליטה מוסלמית ובארצות-ערב. אבותינו ואמותינו לא רק שחיו באזור מאז ומעולם, אלא השתתפו במרקם החיים ותרמו רבות להתפתחות התרבות והאזור. גם היום, תרבות ארצות האיסלאם, המזרח-התיכון ותרבות ערב, הינן חלק מזהותנו, חלק שאיננו יכולים לעקור ושאיננו רוצים לעקור.

בהיסטוריה של יהודי ארצות האיסלאם היו רגעים כואבים. אולם בבחינה הוגנת ומפוכחת, הרגעים הקשים אינם יכולים להסתיר ולכסות על היסטוריה אדירה של חיים משותפים. השליטה המוסלמית ביהודים הייתה סובלנית ונדיבה הרבה יותר מאשר השליטה הלא-מוסלמית, ולא ניתן להשוות את גורל היהודים בארצות האיסלאם לגורלן הטראגי של קהילות יהודיות שלמות באזורים אחרים, ובעיקר באירופה.

אפשר לראות את עשרות השנים האחרונות כשבר בין היהודים וישראל לבין העולם הערבי והמוסלמי. אנחנו מעדיפים לראותן כסדק כואב וזמני בהיסטוריה ארוכה הרבה יותר, הכוללת עבר משותף ועתיד משותף. גם כשאנחנו מסתכלים על המפה, אנחנו רואים את ישראל כחלק מן המזרח-התיכון, ולא רק מן הבחינה הגיאוגרפית.

היהדות והאיסלאם אינן זרות זו לזו מבחינה תיאולוגית-רוחנית, היסטורית ותרבותית. התקיימה ביניהן שותפות רבת דורות, אשר זכרה נמחק בעשורים האחרונים, הן בישראל והן ברוב העולם המוסלמי, זאת יחד עם ההיסטוריה הייחודית של יהודי המזרח וארצות האיסלאם (המהווים כיום כ-50% מהאוכלוסייה היהודית בישראל!). בתהליך הפיוס המתבקש בין מזרח ומערב, בחזרה הרצויה מן העוינות והפחד אל שיתוף הפעולה והחיים המשותפים, היהדות ויהודי המזרח יכולים וצריכים להוות גשר חי של זיכרון, תיקון ושותפות.

מנקודת מבטנו השבר בין ישראל לבין העולם הערבי והמוסלמי אינו יכול להישאר שבר לאורך זמן, שכן הוא חוצה את זהותנו ואת נפשותינו. באשר לסכסוך הטראגי הישראלי-פלסטיני, אנחנו מקווים שיימצא במהרה פתרון הוגן של כבוד והכרה הדדית, של התחשבות בתקוות, בפחדים ובכאבים של הצד הפלסטיני, כמו גם באלה של הצד הישראלי. על כן אנחנו מביעים בזאת את תמיכתנו ברוח שהציג הנשיא אובמה בקהיר, ומצטרפים לתקווה לעתיד שבו גשרים של כבוד הדדי ואנושיות יחליפו חומות של חשד, תוקפנות ושנאה. כל זאת ברוח הצדק וההומאניזם המשותפת הן ליהדות והן לאיסלאם.

روح جديدة – خطاب مهاجري الدّول الإسلاميّة

نحن، بنات وأبناء إسرائيليّين، من سلالة آباء وأمهات قدموا من الدّول العربيّة والإسلاميّة، نعبّر بهذا عن دعمنا للروح الجديدة التي طرحها الرئيس أوباما خلال خطابه في القاهرة – روح تصالحيّة، نظرة ثاقبة، سعي نحو العدل والاحترام. احترام للأديان المختلة، للثقافات المتباينة، وللبشر كافّة.

وُلِدْنَا في إسرائيل ونحن إسرائيليون. تهمّنا دولتنا، ونرغب برؤيتها آمنة، عادلة ومزدهرة لصالح مواطنيها. في الوقت ذاته، لا يمكن للتاريخ الجديد، الذي ولدنا في رحمه، أن يمحو تاريخًا يعود لمئات وآلاف السنوات، حيث عاش آباؤنا وأجدادنا في الشّرق الأوسط، في مساحات مترامية الأطراف يحكمها المسلمون والعرب. لا يقتصر دور آبائنا وأمهاتنا على كونهم عاشوا في هذه المناطق منذ الأزل، بل يتعدّى ذلك بكونهم قد شاركوا وساهموا كثيرًا في نسيج الحياة في هذه الدّول، وواكبوا تطوّره. في هذه الفترة أيضًا، ثقافة الدّول الإسلاميّة، الشّرق الأوسط والثّقافة العربيّة، تُعْتَبَرُ جزءًا من هويّتنا، جزءًا ليس بمقدورنا اجتثاثه، ولا نرغب باقتلاعه أصلاً.

شهد تاريخ يهود الدّول الإسلاميّة لحظات مؤلمة. لكن نظرةً فاحصة، متمحّصة وعادلة، تدلّنا على أنّ تلك اللحظات الصّعبة لا يمكنها أن تتستّر على تاريخ هائل من التّعاون المشترك. اتّسمت السّيادة الإسلاميّة على اليهود بالتّسامح والكرم، أكثر بكثير ممّا كان عليه حالهم تحت السّيادات غير الإسلاميّة، ولا يمكننا أن نعقد مقارنةً بين مصير اليهود في الدّول الإسلاميّة وبين المصير التّراجيديّ الذي ألمَّ بمجتمعات يهوديّة كاملة في مناطق أُخرى، وأساسًا في أُوروبا.

يمكننا أن ننظر إلى العقود الأخيرة على أنّها شرخ بين إسرائيل واليهود وبين العالم العربيّ والإسلاميّ. نفضّل أن ننظر إلى هذا الشّرخ على أنّه شرخ مؤلم مؤقّت في تاريخ أطول بكثير، تاريخ يشمل ماضيًا مشتركًا ومستقبلاً مشتركًا. حتّى حينما نلقي نظرة على الخارطة، فإن إسرائيل بالنّسبة إلينا هي جزء من الشّرق الأوسط، وليس فقط من النّاحية الجغرافيّة.

اليهوديّة والإسلام ليستا بغريبتين الواحدة عن الأخرى من النّاحية التّوحيديّة – الرّوحانيّة، التّاريخيّة والثّقافيّة. فقد انعقدت بينهما شراكة، طيلة أجيال كثيرة، تم محو ذكرها في العقود الأخيرة، سواء في إسرائيل أم في غالبيّة العالم الإسلاميّ، على الرّغم من التّاريخ الخاصّ الذي احتفي به يهود الشّرق الأوسط والعالم الإسلاميّ (والذين يشكّلون اليوم ما يقارب الـ 50% من المجتمع اليهوديّ في إسرائيل!). خلال هذه المرحلة من المصالحة المطلوبة بين الشّرق والغرب، ونحو عودةٍ مرغوبة من الخوف إلى التّعاون والحياة المشتركة، يجب على اليهوديّة واليهود أن يكونوا جسرًا حيًّا للذاكرة، الّترميم والتّعاون.

تخلص وجهة نظرنا إلى أن الشّرخ القائم بين إسرائيل وبين العالم العربيّ والإسلاميّ، لا يمكنه أن يظلّ قائمًا لفترة أطول، إذ أنّ هذه الهوّة تشرخ هويّتنا ونفسيّاتنا. وبالنّسبة للصراع التّراجيديّ الإسرائيليّ-فلسطينيّ، فكلّنا أمل بأن يتمّ العثور، وبأقرب فرصة، على حلّ عادل يقوم على الاحترام والاعتراف المتبادل، آخذين بعين الاعتبار كل من آمال الطّرف الفلسطينيّ، تخوّفاته وآلمه، كما وأيضًا لدى الجانب الإسرائيليّ. وبهذا فإنّنا نعبّر عن دعمنا الرّوح الجديدة التي طرحها الرئيس أوباما في القاهرة، وننضمّ للأمل الذي يحدو بنا نحو مستقبل تتغيّر فيه جدران الشّكّ والعدوانيّة والكراهيّة إلى جسور من الاحترام المتبادل. كل هذا بروح العدل والإنسانيّة المشتركة لليهوديّة وللإسلام.

Nouvel Esprit - Lettre ouverte et collective d’israéliens, descendants de juifs originaires de pays musulmans

Nous, filles et fils d’israéliens originaires de pays arabes et de pays musulmans, exprimons ici notre soutien au nouvel esprit qu'a insufflé le président Obama dans son discours du Caire ; un esprit de réconciliation, une vision réaliste, une volonté de justice et de dignité, un respect des différentes religions et cultures, pour tous les êtres humains.

Nous somme nés en Israël et nous sommes israéliens. Notre pays nous importe et nous voulons le voir sûr, juste, et prospère, pour ses habitants. En même temps, l'histoire récente dans laquelle nous sommes nés, ne peut pas effacer une histoire de centaines et de milliers d'années, durant lesquelles nos ancêtres vivaient au Moyen-Orient, dans les vastes régions musulmanes et dans les pays arabes. Nos ancêtres ont non seulement vécu dans la région depuis des temps immémoriaux, mais ils ont également participé au tissus de la vie, ont contribué de manière significative au développement de la région et de sa culture. Aujourd'hui aussi, la culture du Moyen-Orient et la culture arabe, sont une partie de notre identité dont nous ne pouvons, ni ne voulons nous défaire.

L'histoire des juifs dans les pays musulmans comporte des moments douloureux. Toutefois, une introspection objective révèle que ces moments difficiles ne doivent pas cacher l’histoire ancestrale, caractérisée par une coexistence et une coopération mutuelle. La façon dont les pouvoirs musulmans traitaient les juifs était plus généreuse et plus tolérante que celles des pays non-musulmans. Il est impossible de comparer le destin des juifs dans les pays musulmans avec celui tragique des juifs dans d’autres pays du monde, notamment en Europe.

On peut considérer ces dernières décennies comme une période durant laquelle un profond fossé s’est creusé avec d’un côté Israël et les juifs et de l’autre le monde arabe et musulman. Nous préférons regarder ces années comme une fissure douloureuse et temporaire qui s’inscrit dans une histoire beaucoup plus longue incluant un passé partagé et aussi un avenir partagé. Ainsi, lorsque nous regardons la carte, nous voyons Israël comme une partie de Moyen-Orient, et pas seulement dans une perspective géographique.

Le Judaïsme et l'Islam ne sont pas étrangers l’un à l'autre, d’un point de vue religieux, spirituel, historique et culturel. De très nombreuses générations passées ont connu le partenariat entre ces deux religions, mais sa mémoire s’est estompée au cours des dernières décennies, tant en Israël que dans la majorité du monde musulman. Cela inclut l'histoire unique des juifs orientaux (qui représentent 50% de la population juive actuelle en Israël). Dans le processus nécessaire de réconciliation entre l'Ouest et l'Est, les juifs orientaux peuvent et doivent jouer le rôle d’un pont vivant de mémoire, de partenariat et de réhabilitation.

De notre point de vue, la rupture entre Israël et le monde arabe et musulman ne peut pas continuer longtemps car elle divise notre identité et nos âmes. Concernant le tragique conflit Israélo-palestinien, nous espérons fortement, qu'une solution équitable de respect et de reconnaissance mutuelle sera retrouvée rapidement. Une solution qui prenne en compte les espoirs, les craintes et les douleurs du côté palestinien ainsi que du côté israélien.

Par la présente lettre, nous tenons à exprimer notre soutien à l'esprit nouveau qui a été exposé porté par le Président Obama au Caire. Nous tenons également à exprimer notre espoir dans un avenir, bâti sur des ponts de respect mutuel et humain, qui viendront remplacer des murs de méfiance, d’agressivité et haine. Le tout dans un esprit de justice et d'humanisme que le Judaïsme et l'Islam partagent.

Una Nueva visión. Carta abierta de israelíes descendientes de judíos originarios de países musulmanes.

Nosotros, hijas e hijos israelíes de padres originarios de países árabes y musulmanes, apoyamos la nueva visión presentada por el presidente Obama en su discurso en El Cairo – una mirada reconciliadora, una visión realista, con voluntad de justicia, y de respeto mutuo. Respeto hacia las diferentes religiones y culturas, y a todos, simplemente por su condición de ser humano.

Nacimos en Israel y somos israelíes. Para nosotros, nuestro país es importante, y queremos verlo seguro, justo y prospero para sus habitantes. Somos concientes que la historia reciente, en la que hemos nacido, no puede borrar una historia de cientos y miles de años, en la que nuestros padres y los padres de nuestros padres vivieron en el Medio Oriente, en los extensos territorios musulmanes y en los países árabes. Nuestros antepasados no solo vivieron en esta parte del mundo desde tiempos inmemorables, también fueron parte importante de su vida y aportaron mucho al desarrollo de está región, en la cual se tejieron transferencias culturales mutuas. Hoy en día, la cultura de los países musulmanes del Medio Oriente y de los países árabes es parte de nuestra identidad, una parte que no podemos, ni queremos amputar a nuestra historia.

La historia de los judíos en los países musulmanes nos recuerda momentos duros y dolorosos. Sin embargo, un análisis introspectivo y objetivo nos muestra también que los momentos difíciles, no pueden, ni deben ocultar una larga historia de vida en común. La manera en que los musulmanes trataron los judíos fue mucho más generosa y tolerante que la manera en que fueron tratados por los no-musulmanes. Se torna imposible comparar el destino de los judíos en los países musulmanes, con la trágica historia de los judíos en otras regiones del mundo, sobre todo en Europa.

Muchos consideran los últimos años como un periodo en el cual un profundo barranco se ha formado y separa cada vez más Israel y los judíos del mundo árabe y musulmán. Nosotros preferimos considerarlo como una fisura dolorosa y temporal en una historia mucho más larga, que incluye un pasado y un futuro común. En este sentido, cuando observamos en el mapa de la región, vemos a Israel como parte del Medio Oriente, y no sólo desde una perspectiva geográfica.

El Judaísmo y el Islam no son ajenos el uno del otro desde un punto de vista teológico, espiritual, histórico, o cultural. Siempre a existido entre estas dos religiones un intercambio generacional constante, y que equivocadamente, esta historia común de cooperación et intercambios, tiende a ser borrada de la memoria colectiva en los últimos años, ya sea en Israel como en la mayoría del mundo musulmán. Una evidencia de ese generoso intercambio es la historia peculiar de los judíos de países orientales y musulmanes (que forman el 50% de la sociedad judía en Israel). En el proceso necesario de reconciliación entre el Oriente y el Occidente, el judaísmo y los judíos orientales pueden y deben ser un puente vivaz de memoria, de conciliación y de cooperación.

Desde nuestro punto de vista, la ruptura entre Israel y el mundo islámico-árabe no puede, y no debe durar más, porque divide nuestra identidad y nuestras almas. Esperamos que el trágico conflicto israelí-palestino encuentre rápidamente una solución igualitaria, de respeto y de reconocimiento mutuo. Una solución que acepte la esperanza, el miedo y el dolor de los palestinos, así como el de los israelíes.

Por lo tanto, apoyamos con la presente a la nueva visión que presentó el presidente Obama en El cairo, y nos unimos a la esperanza de un futuro mejor, con el anhelo de construir puentes de respeto mutuo y de humanismo, que se interpongan a muros de sospecha, brutalidad y odio. Todo esto, con un espíritu de justicia, que son características comunes al Judaísmo y al Islam.

Noi, israeliane e israeliani discendenti da antenati provenienti da paesi arabi e musulmani, esprimiamo il nostro sostegno al nuovo spirito che il presidente Obama ha affermato nel suo discorso al Cairo: uno spirito di riconciliazione, una visione realistica col fine di perseguire la giustizia e la dignità, il rispetto per le diverse religioni, culture e per tutti gli esseri umani.

Siamo nati in Israele e ci sentiamo israeliani. Il nostro paese ci è caro, e vorremmo vederlo sicuro, giusto e prospero per il bene dei suoi abitanti.

Tuttavia, la storia recente di cui partecipiamo non può cancellare una storia di centinaia di migliaia di anni, durante i quali i nostri antenati vivevano in Medio Oriente, in vaste aree sotto l'egemonia musulmana e nelle terre arabe. I nostri padri e le madri non solo hanno vissuto in quella zona da tempo immemorabile, ma sono anche parte del suo tessuto vitale poiché hanno contribuito in maniera significativa allo sviluppo della regione e della sua cultura. Oggi la cultura delle terre dell'Islam, la cultura del Medio Oriente, e la cultura araba, sono tutte parte della nostra identità, una parte che può essere scissa, perfino volendo.

La storia degli ebrei nelle terre dell'Islam include momenti dolorosi. Eppure, un’analisi onesta e realistica rivela che i momenti difficili, non possono ignorare o celare una magnifica storia di vita condivisa. Lo Stato musulmano è stato più tollerante e giusto con gli ebrei rispetto ai paesi non-musulmani, e il destino degli ebrei nei paesi musulmani non può essere paragonato alla tragica sorte di intere comunità ebraiche in altre regioni del mondo, soprattutto in Europa.

Si può guardare agli ultimi decenni, come ad un periodo durante il quale si è aperto un profondo abisso tra gli ebrei e il mondo arabo- musulmano.

Noi preferiamo considerare questi anni come una dolorosa ma temporanea crisi, parte, tuttavia, di una storia molto più lunga che comprende un passato condiviso e un futuro condiviso. Dunque, quando si osserva la mappa della nostra regione, si vede Israele come parte del Medio Oriente, e non solo da un punto di vista geografico. Ebraismo e Islam non sono estranei l’uno all’altro a causa di radici religiose, spirituali, storiche e culturali. La collaborazione tra queste due religioni risale ad innumerevoli generazioni passate, ma la memoria di questa collaborazione è sbiadita nel corso degli ultimi decenni, sia in Israele sia nella maggior parte del mondo musulmano. È anche il caso della memoria dell’unicità storica dell'Ebraismo Mizrahi - Orientale (che oggi costituisce il 50% della popolazione ebraica in Israele). Nel processo di riconciliazione che è necessario tra l'Oriente e l'Occidente, gli ebrei orientali possono e devono incarnare un ponte di memoria, di risanamento e collaborazione.

Dal nostro punto di vista, la spaccatura tra Israele e il mondo arabo-musulmano non può essere permanente, dal momento che lacera la nostra identità e le nostre anime. Per quanto riguarda il tragico conflitto israelo-palestinese, ci auguriamo che una soluzione equa nel rispetto e nel riconoscimento reciproco sarà presto trovata. Innanzitutto, in considerazione delle speranze, delle paure e dei dolori della parte palestinese, e altrettanto in considerazione delle speranze, delle paure e dei dolori della parte israeliana.
